* Subterranean Termites Subterranean termites are social insects which live in colonies just as Carpenter ants do. The difference between them are that subterranean termites live in the soil and build dirt tunnels to get to the wooden structures and Carpenter ants build their colony network in the wooden structures. As they both damage/destroy wooden structures many confuse carpenter ants with termites. Subterranean termite colonies are divided into 3 forms or groups which are, The workers, The Soldiers & the reproductives. (see images of each below) Detection of Termite Activity It is important for homeowners to be able to recognize the signs of subterranean termite activity and/or infestation. Subterranean termites can be detected by a sudden swarm of what looks like winged ants called the swarmer and/or by the presence of mud tubes up against the foundation to reach the wooden structure and wood damage.
